You Hear Better in the Dark

Techniques and materials: Pieced, quilted, and appliquéd batik cotton. Hand embellished with metallic thread.

Artwork Statement: I used to spend a lot of time walking our Florida neighborhood with my 18+-year-old canine companion, Noguchi. (Yes, he was named after Isamu Noguchi, the Japanese American Midcentury Artist). Usually my intent was to do so mindfully, although some days I was more skilled at this than others. Noguchi and I especially enjoyed walking at night when the temperature dropped, the moon was full, and the neighborhood was asleep. Although the din from the not-so-distant highway seemed ever present, the darkness awakened the senses, especially one’s awareness of sound as well as color; scents too, if you asked Noguchi, may he rest in peace!
