Jumping Off Place
Project type
Fiber Art
Techniques and materials: Pieced, quilted, and appliquéd commercial batik cotton, reclaimed vintage tulle. Machine embroidery, hand stitching.
Artwork Statement: Devotees of mid century art may be aware of a series of paintings of swimming pools which were executed by David Hockney. The most famous image was “A Bigger Splash” which he completed in 1967 while teaching at UC Berkeley. Feeling inspired, I pieced and quilted Jumping off Place in some dark commercial batik I had in my stash. The vintage tulle came from the remains of one of my mother’s high school formals (believe it or not). As I was working on it, I was reminded, coincidentally, of a line from the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes,” and it occurred to me that the imagery in these works, perhaps especially mine, might evoke something more poignant than a quick dip in a pool on a hot California afternoon.
