Mood Lifting
Project type
Fiber Art
Techniques and materials: Pieced and embroidered, reclaimed vintage Japanese indigo-dyed cotton. Hand-spun art yarn, hand stitching.
Artwork statement: This piece is reminiscent of a Japanese practice called “boro,” the mending and re-mending of old textiles, often those dyed with indigo. Born of necessity and a philosophy of wasting nothing, it has become an art form, with well-worn re-mended antique indigo-dyed textiles bringing large sums. I admit to having fallen under its spell. Although the textile fragments in this piece range in age from the recently re-dyed to the antique, textiles like these hold stories they will never fully reveal.
Mood Lifting earned a Merit Award at the 71st Annual Fall Juried Exhibition, The Link Art Gallery Oct 10-Nov 7, 2025.
