When Lightning Strikes
Project type
Fiber Art
dimensions
20 x 48.5"
Techniques and Materials: Machine pieced & quilted with hand stitching. Hand-dyed cotton, sari silk ribbon.
Whether literally, metaphorically, or mythologically, lightning strikes can be interpreted in a variety of ways. These might include literal or figurative representations of stormy weather, a powerful life event, a brilliant concept, a sudden illumination, an unexpected idea, even a spiritual message. Or perhaps it's just a reminder that the weather in Indiana seems more volatile now that it was when I was younger. Maybe I should have entitled this piece "Spring" instead.
The hand-dyed cotton in "When Lightning Strikes" was created by a master dyer who frequently taught the craft. After her passing, the remainder of her fabric stash went to a friend whom I met at our local art center when we were both dropping off work for a new show. She explained that she admired my work and that she had some hand-dyed fabric that needed a new home. I remain grateful for her trust and generosity, as well as the encouragement it represents, and will be incorporating this beautiful fabric into my work for years to come.
