Techniques and Materials: Pieced and quilted Cherrywood hand-dyed cotton; vintage African hand-woven, appliquéd, and embroidered skirt panel; hand stitching.

I was delighted to be the highest bidder on a couple of lots of African textiles in an auction of the estate of a collector of Africana. Among the textiles was a vintage handwoven skirt with a richly appliquéd and embroidered front panel. I decided to use the panel as the basis of a larger piece so, after much contemplation and a false start or two, I went into my stash of Cherrywood hand-dyed cotton and found some blues and pinks which coordinated with the splendid handiwork in the embellished panel. I hope I’ve done it justice! I am always a bit ambivalent about deconstructing vintage materials, but I’m hopeful that their incorporation into new works of art increases the probability that they will be enjoyed rather than hidden away in storage.
