New work for a new season
New in the Gallery:
“Dignity and Grace,” won a red ribbon at the Covered Bridge Art Association’s September open show! This was my first exhibition at CBAA Gallery (Rockville IN). They were so welcoming. I look forward to showing there again.
2 AM on a Random Tuesday is one of four 12 x 12” pieces which I have submitted for the Small Works Show at ArtsIlliana (Terre Haute IN). Images of the others can be found in the gallery on the website. (I’ll let you know if any are accepted.) Each is stretched over a gallery wrapped canvas. The strainer provides much needed support, especially for smaller works which tend wrinkle and twist without a little bit of tension. Working small gives me the opportunity to be a bit more experimental. Trying out new techniques and strategies feels a little less risky when I’m working “small,” and I can apply what I learn to larger pieces which consume more resources.
“Boundary Crossing” is a much larger piece made primarily from African wax prints. I may submit it to a quilt show in 2027. Quilt shows appear to have somewhat different entry requirements compared to the other art venues where my work has been exhibited. I hope I’ve managed to hit the marks with this piece!
Exhibit Updates:
Bank on Art (101 W National Ave, Brazil IN) opens its fall exhibition, See Me, See You, with a reception on Saturday, October 17 (4 to 7 pm). The show runs through December 12. I’m delighted that the gallerist has selected a few pieces of my work for the show. It's an honor to be included!
Link Art Gallery (132 S Central Ave, Paris IL) will host its 72nd Annual Fall Juried Exhibition (America 250: Landscapes, Traditions & Community) Oct 23 through Nov 20. The opening is scheduled for Oct 30 (5 to 6:30 pm Central). I haven't yet decided what to submit for the show.
Boyville (by Sears and Roebuck) was selected for inclusion in an exhibit called “Memory” at the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County in Crawfordsville IN (222 S Washington St). Thirty three artworks by 27 artists are featured in the show which runs through October 31.
Members of the Wabash Valley Art Guild have been invited to show their work in Moench Hall at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology (5500 Wabash Ave, Terre Haute). A reception is scheduled for Thursday October 22 (4:30 to 6:30 pm). The show closes December 16. I have entered 6 pieces including the large triptych, She Who Hears the Cries.
Thanks to the River City Art Association, I am the featured artist at The Hometown Savings Bank (2503 Poplar St, Terre Haute) until mid January 2027. You are welcome to stop in to see the work even if you don’t have banking business to accomplish! The staff seems to enjoy having local art in their workspace and I appreciate the opportunity to show several of my larger works in the same space!
Featured Artist: Meg Maher Pierce
This month I am delighted to feature Meg Maher Pierce, whom I met at SPAACES, the contemporary art gallery and studio space in Sarasota FL. A native of New York, Meg grew up near Buffalo and has been immersed in art and art making her entire life. With degrees from the College of New Rochelle, Columbia University, and the Pratt Institute, she enjoyed a long career as an art teacher on Long Island. Although NYC continues to be her spiritual home, she now devotes herself to her art practice in Sarasota where she has earned signifiant recognition including a series of residencies in Sarasota, Virginia, Wyoming, Georgia, Connecticut, New York, and Ireland. She continues to show widely in the NY area and across Florida.
In her recent work, Meg uses vintage textiles, linens, and fragments of clothing (bibs, collars, infant dresses, christening gowns), perhaps worn and frayed by time and use, with a wide range of techniques include hand stitching and indigo dyeing, as well as original photography and cyanotype printing. Patiently sewn stitch by stitch, the pieces carry a quiet universal resonance and an empathy for our fragile existence while honoring the spirits of the fiber makers as well as the people who wore the garments. Through this delicate hand-stitched work, Meg celebrates nuance, femininity, and the hidden intricacies of life, aligning a contemporary aesthetic with a deeply personal expression of history and self.
If it isn’t already obvious, I greatly admire Meg’s philosophy, as well as her complex and careful stitchery. I’m sure her influence on my work is obvious, especially in my attempts to incorporate vintage clothing and other vintage hand-crafted items into some of my own work. I’m so grateful for our conversations, my visits to her Sarasota studio, and for the inspiration her work evokes.
