Fabulous Fiber @Gaslight Gallery
New in the gallery: There are two new pieces in the gallery “Protect the Magic” and “The Crowded Space Between Thoughts.” Both were created from hand-dyed African textiles which I recently purchased at auction and some hand-dyed “cherrywood” cotton which came from a friend when she was downsizing her fabric stash (Thanks again Phoebe)! It's so nice to have such a range of hand-dyed solids to incorporate into pieces that feature large scale prints. I hope you’ll have a closer look (www.fiberartfanatic.com).

Exhibit Updates: There is a lot of art to enjoy this month!
Gaslight’s 7th Annual Fiber Art Exhibition (featured in this edition of my blog) opened July 18th and runs through Sept 12th. The awards reception is scheduled for Aug 15. I am delighted to have three pieces in a very strong show. Additional details can be found at www.gaslightartcolony.com.

Thanks to the River City Art Association, I am the featured artist at The Hometown Savings Bank (2503 Poplar St, Terre Haute) until mid January 2027. You are welcome to stop in to see the work even if you don’t have banking business to accomplish! The staff seems to enjoy having local art in their workspace and I appreciate the opportunity to show several of my larger works in the same space!

Link Gallery in Paris IL (linkartgallery.org) is hosting a members’ show for The River City Art Association until to August 7. “She Who Hears the Cries,” a large triptych which was created from vintage textiles that my mother saved for decades, is hanging just inside the front door! I couldn’t have asked for a better spot to display such a large piece.

The River City Art Association is mounting its 18th annual juried art exhibit at First Financial Bank (One First Financial Plaza, Terre Haute, IN) Aug 7th - 31st. The opening reception and awards ceremony is scheduled for August 7, 5:30-7:30.
Arts Illiana is hosting its annual End of Summer Extravaganza from Aug 21 to Sept 18 (23 N 6th Terre Haute IN). I have submitted 3 small works but haven’t yet heard whether they have been accepted.
I also entered 3 pieces in the Indiana State Fair. Growing up I showed horses and other projects in the 4-H division but never exhibited art projects (let alone in the “professional” division!) If you decide to visit the State Fair, be sure to enjoy the professional arts section in the Arts Building. “Old timers,” like me, knew it as the “Women’s Building” but it was rebranded some years ago. (They even put in a Men’s Room-but I’m told you need to get to the basement via an outdoor staircase to access it. LOL).
Featured Exhibition:
This month I decided to feature an exhibition rather than an individual artist, although there are individuals with work in this show whom I hope to feature in the future!
The 7th Annual Juried Fiber Art Exhibition showcases creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation in fiber art. The exhibition opened on July18 at the Gaslight Art Colony and Gallery, located at 516 Archer Avenue in downtown Marshall IL. Featured artists employ a variety of techniques including weaving, quilting, embroidery, felting, slow stitching, collage, as well as fiber-based media, paper, textiles, dried plant materials, yarn, and thread. I encourage you to see the show and to participate in the awards reception planned for Aug 15 at 6 PM Central.

I am delighted to have 3 pieces in such a beautiful and diverse show.

Jo Rich-Vadas, cofounder of the organization, initiated the annual show because Colony members who worked with fiber expressed concern there were few opportunities in the area to exhibit fiber-based art. Since that time, fiber has slowly gained recognition as a fine art medium that is often welcomed in group shows but Gaslight’s annual exhibition remains one of the few fiber-focused shows in area. I am grateful to have found this welcoming community of artists and always look forward to the annual event.

The 7th Annual Juried Fiber Art Exhibition runs until Sept 12 with the awards reception scheduled for Aug 15 at 6 PM Central Time. I hope you’ll join me at the reception and see the show.
