New in the Gallery

I've had a productive few weeks! Three new works are posted in my gallery on the website: Women's Work, Perfecting Imperfection, and When Lightening Strikes. If you missed them on social media, I hope you'll have a peek.

Exhibit Updates
The Expressions of Freedom exhibit at Carneige Museum in Crawfordsville IN continues through July 18.
BankOnArt (www.bankonartgallery.com) has added me to their growing list of artists. Their current show BLOOM/HUM/GLOW is on display until June 6. The gallery space is gorgeous. It's a great excuse to make a trip to Brazil! The juxtaposition of media (glass, photogravure, sound, fiber, paint) is inspiring. If you have the opportunity to see it, give Gabriele my best!
The Wabash Valley Art Guild Spring Show is on view at First Financial Plaza on Wabash Avenue in downtown Terre Haute IN. The opening reception is scheduled for May 1 (6 to 8 PM) and the show contintues throughout the month of May.
Featured artist: Zann Carter

I first encountered Zann Carter’s work at the smallART2025 Exhibition hosted by ArtsIlliana (Terre Haute, IN). In addition to a few of my small works, the juried exhibit included two of her small talismanic weavings. Both of which captured my heart (and later became part of my personal collection). When our paths finally crossed in person at a local art fair, I discovered the breath of her oeuvre (weavings made on a small frame loom, textile books, 3D pieces she calls ‘whimsies," poetry) and the ease with which she utilizes and hybridizes a variety of techniques (felting, weaving, knitting, crocheting, stitching). She gravitates towards freeform and intuitive expression while working with natural fibers, vintage textile fragments, beads, tokens, and other found and created objects which evoke the spiritual. Personal experiences have led her to recognize the healing power of making art, a quality that is evident to viewers and one from which we also benefit. As her artist statement suggests, she makes “garments to wear in dreams and fairy tales, artifacts from a world permeated with magic and myth, a bearable reality’s Incantations.”

See more of her work on Instagram www.instagram.com/zanncarter and her website www.zanncarter.com or at http://www.lizardsintheleaves.blogspot.com. She can be reached at zanncarter@gmail.com. She often shares her poetry on Poetry Night (ArtsIlliana, Terre Haute IN, the third Thursday of every month), an institution she helped to found.

May the month of May bring you many reasons to smile (and, perhaps, minimal stormy weather!)
Michael
