We Made the Newspaper!

I was surprised and delighted with the media attention the recent Wabash Valley Art Guild exhibition received. It's been a long time since my picture was in the newspaper. I’m grateful for the attention and happy it was in the “arts” section and not elsewhere. LOL

I am also honored to be featured by Create Whimsy as one of their “spotlight” artists. Please see  https://createwhimsy.com/projects/spotlight-michael-stevenson-fiber-artist/ for details!

New in the gallery: I have managed to complete 2 of the 4 pieces I’ve been working on for the past few weeks. Typically, I work on one piece at a time but each of these projects involved developing new skills which required time to ponder. It's been an adventure but I’m pleased with the results. Have a look at Anonymous Quotation No. 1 (31 1/2” x 43 1/2” Pieced and quilted Cherrywood hand-dyed cotton, vintage African hand-woven, appliquéd, and embroidered skirt panel; hand stitching) and Happily the Peaceful Live (27” x 41” Pieced and quilted batik and hand-dyed cotton, hand-dyed vintage crochet, hand stitching). Be sure to let me know what you think!

Exhibit Updates: The Gaslight Art Colony 17th Bi-annual Members’ Show, “Celebrating 250 Years Through Art,” runs until July 11. Gaslight’s 7th Annual Fiber Art Exhibition opens July 18th with a reception (5 to 7 pm CST) and runs through Sept 13th. I have work in both shows! Details can be found at www.gaslightartcolony.com.

I am the featured artist at The Hometown Savings Bank (2503 Poplar St, Terre Haute) from mid July until Mid January 2027. I'll hang the show mid July so stay tuned!

Link Gallery in Paris, IL is hosting a members’ show for The River City Art Association July 10 to August 7. A reception is scheduled for July 10, 5 to 7 CST. I have decided to enter “She Who Hears the Cries” a large triptych which was created out of vintage textiles that my mother saved for decades. I don’t often have opportunities to show it because of its size. https://linkartgallery.org

The Expressions of Freedom exhibit at Carnegie Museum in Crawfordsville IN closes on July 18. There are only a few more days to see the show.

I have also decided to enter 3 pieces in the Indiana State Fair. Growing up I showed horses and other projects in the 4-H division but never exhibited art projects (let alone in the “professional” division!) I’ll offer additional details in next month’s blog.

Featured Artist: Elizabeth Goodwill

Elizabeth
Elizabeth

Elizabeth and I met at Creative Liberties Studios and Gallery in Sarasota, Florida which she co-founded with business partner, Barbara Gerdeman. The enterprise is the core of a lively arts district and now supports over 40 local artists across 3 locations! Being welcomed into the Creative Liberties family helped me to establish a productive art practice and opened countless opportunities for creative advancement and inspiration. I’ll never forget their enthusiastic and genuine reaction when I first showed up at the Gallery with examples of my work. Their support and guidance helped me to build sufficient confidence to feel as though I could participate in the art community and contribute to our collective endeavors in meaningful ways. For that, I will always be grateful.

Sculpture
Sculpture

In addition to her responsibilities at Creative Liberties, Elizabeth is a sculptor, fiber, and mixed media artist whose work blends playfulness with thoughtful craftsmanship. (Among other things, she hand-spins art yarn, strands of which often appear in my own work!) She holds an MFA from New Mexico State University and a BFA from The Ohio State University. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally since 1999 and is held in private collections worldwide.

Weaving

She has always been a collector of found objects. Every trip to the beach and hike in the forest provides bountiful treasures which inspire and sometimes adorn her artwork. Her love for the natural world is reflected in her art both literary and figuratively. Her animal sculptures are in reverence to the unique and ever changing natural world. Her weavings reflect upon the geology, flora and fauna, and textures of her observed world. Every piece has a history, a story, a poem, a person attributed to it. Just as in nature, no two are like; each work reflects Elizabeth’s reverence of the natural world.
